If you experience any of the above symptoms, you will most likely be diagnosed with the periodontal disease (gum disease). The primary cause of gum disease is the plaque build-up on the teeth and others include:

  • Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause where the gums are more sensitive to the tartar present on the teeth.
  • Illnesses such as diabetes, HIV, or oral cancer can have an impact on the periodontal health.
  • Adverse habits like smoking may prolong the gum repair due to its harmful effects
  • Poor oral hygiene habits such as irregular brushing and not using a floss can result in gum disease.
  • Medications like anti-seizure, anti-hypertensive drugs can cause abnormal growth of gum tissue.
  • A family history of dental disease can be a contributing factor to the development of gum disease.

The treatment of periodontal disease encompasses the following:

  • Scaling (cleaning) and root planing (deep cleaning) where the plaque and tartar are removed from the tooth and root surfaces. Irrigation can be performed professionally as well as at-home to remove the tartar between your teeth.
  • A minor surgical procedure, known as 'flap surgery', can be done when the infection is deep and has reached the bone surrounding the tooth. Lasers can also be employed in this procedure to ward off the infectious microbes.
  • Bone grafts can be added during the surgical procedure to increase the volume of bone that was lost due to gum disease.

Mouth is the mirror of the body and a sound periodontal health is a requisite for systemic wellness. A periodontal maintenance regimen with 3-months interval is recommended by the American Academy of Periodontology.
